it’s going to be a quick one this week! don’t have a huge amount to say about this song other than a) it is banging, b) it is a lottttt of fun, and c) it’s poking at a lot of feelings i been having lately as i enter my last 6 months of my 20s. but also, quick one this week because the last few weeks have been kinda rough for all sorts of reasons, and i’m a lil run down, but let’s not dwell on that! let’s bop to this. meet lynks, and their song use it or lose it, a silly lil jumpy number that i really like. you may have already heard of this artist, i won’t lie, they’re bumping up against the upper limit of what i think should be featured on here, but they do make it under the line, so let’s roll with it because the songs good!
my dad once told me music videos need to be a bit weird, and i think he was spot on. but more than that, music and musicians should be a bit weird i think! it’s a weird thing we do, making air vibrate for the shits and gigs. this is an artist that leans into that, and uses that as a tool to share some really really personal thoughts and ideas. in this instance, the lyrics talking about the somewhat unique experience of growing old as a gay person, but also the fears and insecurities of aging as told by someone young is pretty universal i think. i tihnk this is a great example of someone taking something that people all around the world feel and sharing enough of it for people to latch on to while also sharing how it feels to be that person. songwriters take note! this is a really really good example of this, and this sells records. twenty one pilots have made a career off it. what else is fun in this? well, i love the use of what almost sound like artificial vocals to deliver some of the main lines. it’s brazen, and a bit ballsy, but very very fun. that tied in with this songs ability to turn on and off at a moments notice how much energy is happening is so cool.
i think my complaint with this song is that it has some pretty heavy lows, but it’s heights really lack something. like when this song goes, it sounds no different and delivers nothing more than when it was bopping around in the chorus. i feel like having a moment of a wee apex would’ve really done a lot for this, bringing it up to another level. it could’ve been anything really, a new rhythmic element, an extra melody, anything at all but without that extra something, it falls a lil flat.
one time i showed my boss the diagram of twinks and bears as told by it’s always sunny, and she was like ohh i wanna show this to my friend so she went to google it and instead on her work computer googles twinks and bears and, well, the rest is history.
this artist actually really reminds me of an act i’ve been repping on here for a while, the big boys over in warmduscher, both for the energy, and for the brazen balls to the walls of it all. god bless
this act is going to blow up i can tell you that much for free. i’ve seen them live on a crappy tiny stage at a festival with barely any sound coming through and let me tell you. the entire set was off the chain good. i loved it, the crowd loved it and that’s a big sign! if someones at that level on the tiniest stage, you know they’re destined for the big ones. don’t forget, you heard it here first.
